60th Anniversary NASA Space Flight Awareness Honoree Award

This award, one of the highest presented to NASA and industry, is presented to employees for their dedication to quality work and flight safety.

To qualify, the individuals must have contributed beyond their normal work requirements to achieve significant impact on attaining a particular human space flight program goal; contributed to a major cost savings; been instrumental in developing modification to hardware, software, or materials that increase reliability, efficiency, or performance; assisted in operational improvements; or been a key player in developing a beneficial process improvement.

NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement recognized Ms. Wimmer for her guidance and invaluable contributions in establishing NASA’s STEM Engagement Council and for her tireless leadership as NASA transitioned it’s STEM engagement programs to immerse the public in NASA’s work, enhance STEM literacy and inspire the next generation to explore. Ms. Wimmer’s enthusiasm, positive attitude, and compassion inspired the team as change brought on new possibilities and challenges. Perhaps most vital, is the impact she had had in re-invigorating a commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across the agency. This past year, her leadership to transform the agency’s STEM function has brought new purpose to the Office of STEM Engagement and a revitalized outlook in the staff in the face of obstacles and challenges. Ms. Wimmer’s extensive history of working collaboratively with NASA Center personnel across the country to coordinate and lead the implementation of high profile efforts made her an excellent candidate for the Space Flight Awareness Award. For most, the challenges would have been monumental – how to shift a long-standing highly fragmented and distributed approach to a corporate and strategic operational model. Ms. Wimmer’s strong leadership eased the transition, facilitating the defining of the agency’s strategy for STEM Engagement and helping to outline objectives and strategies that will drive a new portfolio of programs, projects, activities and products agency-wide.
